Ridge St Project given green light!

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

The zoning approvals are now in hand enabling construction at the 7 1/2 Ridge St project in Nashua.   The special exception and variance were both unanimously approved by the Nashua Zoning Board of Adjustment at Tuesday’s meeting.   Special thanks goes to:

  • Attorney Terry Gormley of Gormley & Gormley P.C. who presented our request to the zoning board
  • Architect Dave Ely of Windy Hill Associates, who came up with multiple house designs to fit the constraints of the lot
  • Habitat Building Committee Chair Eric Moore

Now that this hurdle has been passed, the next phase is to engage an engineering firm to generate detailed engineering plans to enable application for a building permit.   The application process for the partner family is still open.   If you know a working family making $15,000-$43,000 per year who may be in need of an affordable home, please encourage them to apply.   Read more information about how families are selected.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Nashua Holiday Stroll – November 29

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nashua Stroll: a Chance to Help Those in Need of Housing

An Annual Tradition Returns to the Stroll for a Good Cause

Nashua – The Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity will return this year to the Nashua Stroll with its famous annual Bake Sale. The event will take place on Saturday, November 29th from 5PM- 9 PM.  It will be held at the United Methodist Church on 154 Main Street, Nashua, New Hampshire.

Once again, the organization seeks volunteers for baked good donations and to help run the event.  The proceeds are all directed toward the Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity and our organization’s efforts to build and renovate houses, “so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow”.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.

If you are interested in baking something for the sale, or volunteering to help at the bake sale, please contact Ellen Svenson at 603-883-0295 or at office@nashabitat.org.

If you would like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview with Ellen Svenson, please call Ed Lopez at 603-883-0295 or email Ed at ed.lopez@nashabitat.org.

Re-elected members include: Karen Files, and Jerry Harrow.

The new Board of Directors convened for the first time this month.  President Jerry Harrow, who was re-elected as President of the Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity by the Board of Directors, stated that he “looks forward to working with this diverse and energetic group of leaders”.  He added: “The Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity is currently accepting applications for properties in Wilton and Nashua; we hope to place new families in these properties soon – that, and the growing number of small projects we are tackling will keep newly elected board members busy… it also means that we are still looking for volunteers to help grow our organization and to help us raise funds for these projects”.

We are Accepting Housing Applications

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity is Accepting Applications for Home Ownership

Seeks Families in Need of Housing for Properties to be built in Wilton and Nashua

Nashua – The Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity (GNHFH) is currently accepting applications from families for two properties in the Greater Nashua area. The properties are located in Wilton and Nashua.

The organization is seeking families that are willing to partner with GNHFH, that can demonstrate need based on the condition of their current residence, and who can show the ability to pay a no-interest mortgage. This is a great opportunity for families who need to improve their living conditions and who are willing to partner with GNHFH in the effort to provide adequate and affordable housing to other families in need.

Newsletter Folding – November 24

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

It is time to send out our Holiday issue of the GNHFH Newsletter, we need help preparing this to be mailed. We need 20-25 people to help with the assembling (folding, stuffing, sealing, and putting on mailing labels) this Monday, November 24th, starting at 7.00pm.

This is a good opportunity for junior and senior high school students under 16, who are not allowed to volunteer on a construction site, to volunteer. It is also a great opportunity for partner families to gather ’sweat equity’ hours.

Pizza, Snacks, and Soda will be Served. (Marie, a fellow volunteer, will bring her famous Chocolate Pumpkin Cookies with her – you really need to try these out!).

The assembling will be done in the basement of the Main Street United Methodist Church in downtown Nashua. If you can participate in this activity, please let us know. Thank you very much.

Build – November 22

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

This Saturday, we’ll support the NH state government’s Stay Warm NH project, helping to weatherize several Nashua-area homes for the winter. This will be indoor work, with at least two small teams working in parallel. We’ll meet at EMC2’s lot at 9 Townsend West in Nashua, distributing tools and proceeding from there.

For an advance look at project details, there’s a training video and a PowerPoint presentation at the Stay Warm NH Web site, www.staywarmnh.org. I have a DVD copy of the video as well; please contact me if you’d like to see that. I’ll bring hard copies of the PowerPoint.

Annual Nashua Stroll Bake Sale for Habitat for Humanity

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

We’re having our Annual Nashua Stroll Bake Sale for Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, November 29th from 5.00pm to 9.00pm. It will be held at the United Methodist Church on Main Street. The proceeds are all directed toward the Greater Nashua Habitat for Humanity and our organization’s efforts to build and renovate houses, “so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow”.

We really want to get as many people out to the Bake Sale as possible: please let your family, friends, and colleagues know that this is a great place to buy a snack during the Stroll: you can get a great deal on home-made treats. Last year, many of these treats sold-out. This year Bake Sale organizers are making sure to stock-up with extras – but we really need your help in making their efforts a success. Let’s show an even stronger presence at this event and lets remind others of it as well!
